Cookies and analytics

Cookies are small text files stored on your device. We use them to make the site work properly, to remember your preferences and to understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it.

We may use third-party analytics tools that use cookies to collect information about your visit, generally in aggregated or pseudonymised form. This helps us see which posts are popular and how people find us. These providers process data under their own privacy policies.

You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. Where required by law, we will ask for your consent before setting non-essential cookies. If you block cookies, some parts of the site may not work as intended.

Affiliate links and Amazon

Some of our posts contain affiliate links, including links to Amazon. When you click an affiliate link, the retailer or affiliate network may place a cookie on your device to record that you came from our site, so that we can earn a commission if you make a qualifying purchase. We don’t receive your name, payment details or other personal information from these purchases. Your purchase is handled by the retailer under its own privacy policy. See our Affiliate Disclosure for more detail.

Our email newsletter (beehiiv)

Our newsletter is delivered through beehiiv, a third-party email platform. When you subscribe, your email address and sign-up details are stored by beehiiv on our behalf. beehiiv may also collect information about how you interact with our emails, such as whether you open them or click links, which helps us understand what readers find useful.

We only send the newsletter to people who have signed up. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe at any time. beehiiv’s handling of your data is described in its own privacy policy.

Our Etsy shop

Our aviation art is sold through Etsy. If you buy from our Etsy shop, Etsy processes your order and payment, and its privacy policy applies. Etsy shares with sellers the details needed to fulfil an order, such as your name and shipping address, and we use those details only to fulfil and support your order.

How we use your information

  • To run, maintain and improve the website.
  • To send you our newsletter, if you have subscribed.
  • To reply to your messages and comments.
  • To understand how the site is used and which content is helpful.
  • To earn affiliate commissions that help keep the site running.
  • To protect the site against spam, abuse and security threats.
  • To comply with our legal obligations.

Where the GDPR applies, we rely on your consent (for example, for the newsletter and non-essential cookies), our legitimate interests (for example, running and securing the site) and our legal obligations as our lawful bases for processing.

Sharing your information

We don’t sell your personal information for money. We share it only with service providers that help us run the site, such as our web host, analytics providers, our newsletter platform (beehiiv) and affiliate programs, and where we are required to by law.

Overseas transfers

Some of our service providers store or process data outside Australia, including in the United States. Where we use overseas providers, we take reasonable steps to make sure your information is handled in a way that is consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles and, where applicable, the GDPR.

How long we keep information

We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes described above. For example, newsletter details are kept until you unsubscribe, and messages are kept for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry. After that, we delete or anonymise it.

Keeping your information secure

We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss and unauthorised access, including using secure (HTTPS) connections and reputable service providers. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, so we can’t guarantee absolute security.
